The competitive landscape is where your Heroes are looking for the value you provide. You are never there alone and the more competition you have in that landscape, the more advantage you need to stand out.
Competition includes companies who are competing directly with you, or indirect competitors, such as the status quo or alternative options that help solve the Hero’s need for value from a different perspective – think Bidet vs. Toilet Tissue.
Your competitive landscape also includes the environment. Elements you should or should not enact on that can hinder or excel your competitive advantage. For example, Toys R Us not taking the right approach to e-commerce and falling to Amazon and stores like Walmart and Target, or of Blockbuster failing to realize the power of streaming.
We need to understand the anatomy of the competitive landscape so we can best position ourselves against the competition and also look for trends, technology, partnerships, etc. we can leverage to our advantage.
In a previous newsletter, I wrote about Brand, Price, and Value. Which allows us to build a better picture of what we need to compete.
When we start understanding the Value our Hero needs, and the QUALITY (Upcoming newsletter) of the value we offer, we can start to understand ways to position your business in the competitive landscape.
